Bernalillo Elementary serves grades 3 thru 5 and was constructed in a residential neighborhood in Bernalillo, NM next to the District’s existing Middle School to create one unified campus. It offers an age appropriate adjacency to both schools and allows for shared use of facilities including the bus drop-off, playfields and parking. The available site for the new school was split by an existing irrigation acequia and thus restricted the campus’ buildable area. Therefore, the development of a two-story classroom scheme was essential for the project’s constructability. The two-story facility allowed for a very compact footprint enhancing the efficiency of the building in both usable space and energy consumption.
